Ports have a powerful drive

The new director of the Danish ports, Tine Kirk Pedersen, is pleased with the business background and experience from politically-owned organizations.

She is familiar with the political machine and finds the political work both interesting and important. However, the commercial aspects of a politically owned company make Tine Kirk Pedersen most delighted for her new position as Director of the Danish Ports.

”Ports are first and foremost a business and a major task for me and the industry is to improve the framework conditions so that the ports can evolve - just like businesses that create local growth and jobs,” she says.

And although the Danish ports are very different in size and situation, she does not see any obstacles in connection with drafting a common agenda for the development of the port in the coming years. ”I have already visited several ports, and I understood that ports have a powerful drive and are in a hurry to make the most of their potential. That's the potential I'm going to trigger in my position here”, says Tine Kirk Pedersen.


She has been the Head of the Danish Ports at some point, when the future terms of the ports were for debate. A new maritime law is on its way as outlined by the government's growth plan for the “Blue Denmark”, where the maritime sector can move in the coming years.

“As an important responsibility of our brand, we must have increasingly exploited the potential of “the blue highways”. There was a period when we have not brought the waterways sufficiently into scene. That’s so bad, because the potential here is huge. The maritime transport is part of the solution for congestion and wear problems related to our highways and related environmental problems. The administrative burden associated with the maritime transport is currently disproportionate in relation to land transport.

We have to work with some very basic framework conditions – and the same is valid in relation to EU objectives for multimodal transport solutions. This covers the political issues – but also the business, because the framework conditions are affecting the competitive conditions of ports and maritime transport in a direct way”.


Tine Kirk Pedersen’s opinion on the government's growth plan, “Blue Denmark - A Global Maritime Power Hub” is the following: ”Although I might have wanted even more attention to the growth and employment possibilities created by the many ports in the catchment area and local community, the growth plan contains a number of interesting opportunities for the Danish ports. This covers the intermediate goal of the Growth Plan to strengthen the maritime entrepreneurial environment. Another interesting area is the focus of the plan on making Denmark a leading laboratory for testing new maritime technologies, production methods and energy production. Other intermediate goals of the Growth Plan are to develop, test and use the equipment for automation of shipping operations, etc. From a historical point of view, ports have proven to be good at using the new opportunities and developing their business “, says Tine Kirk Pedersen.


As for the draft of a new maritime law, Tine Kirk Pedersen has some interests and wishes on behalf of the ports. Negotiations are expected to be initiated during this autumn. The demands and wishes of all actors in the sector must be united. 

“The Danish ports will prioritize requirements and wishes that strengthen the ports’ business opportunities - by taking into account the existing legislation in Denmark and EU”, says Tine Pedersen, who sends a friendly thought to the Secretariat for offering professional support to a new manager considering the fact that the manager did not had enough time to read the complex issues.


Tine Pedersen thrives in the crossroads between political and commercial activities. She has studied and has background in market-related jobs in DSB and Sund & Bælt, where she has worked as a Marketing Manager. She has also been close to the political system as an Officer of the Ministry of Transport for a period of 8 years.

“I had a wonderful reception here. I've managed to properly use my skills, my experience and my network. The Danish ports will work with political interest and as a networking organization in a sector whose structural and economic significance for Denmark is major. And we do this the best we can if we think at ports as a business that has major local significance and that creates up to 10% of the jobs in the local area“, says Tine Kirk Pedersen.
